Overview of Kilmer

Neighborhood

The Kilmer neighborhood is located in the northwest corner of St. Louis Park in Ward 4. The neighborhood is bordered by the city of Minnetonka to the west and south, Highway 169 to the east, and I-394 to the north. Kilmer occupies just 91 acres of land, including a large pond. The neighborhood was developed in the mid 1950’s by Ecklund & Swedlund. The builders annexed to St. Louis Park from Minnetonka because of the city’s inability to provide water and sewers to new developments.

Kilmer is completely residential. A total of 245 housing units exist in the neighborhood, all of which are single family homes. The average construction year of houses is 1957. The population of the neighborhood is a little over 590, and 87 percent of families are classified as small (meaning 2 to 3 family members). Kilmer is a relatively well-educated community, with 48 percent of residents achieving bachelor’s or graduate degrees. Kilmer boasts a beautiful landscape of rolling hills, mature trees, and of course its large pond which is at the center of the community.

Even though Kilmer is completely residential, there is a Lifetime Athletic tennis club located in the northwest corner. This tennis club is a popular destination during the warmer months in the year for residents.

Across I-394 is Kip’s Irish Pub & Restaurant, which is a local favorite. The establishment was started by an Irishman by the name of Kip Finnegan in 2005 and features a new outdoor patio with a gas fire pit. One of Kip’s most popular dishes is the famous chicken boxy.

The main outdoor feature of the neighborhood is Kilmer Pond, which is so large it is often mistaken for a lake. There are no parks located in Kilmer but the neighborhood is conveniently located right next the large Ford Park just over the border of Minnetonka. The park’s main features are its walking trails that run that take visitors through its beautiful landscape. Other amenities include a picnic table, playground, and picnic shelter.
